Day 5 (noon): Discover Gua Gomantong

Nature Lodge Kinabatangan van arrived at 11.45am. We brought all our stuff down (it’s not that hard as we backpacking). The driver introduced himself as Jay. My first impression of him is the normal van driver similar with the others that we encountered along the journey. Later I realised my impression was so wrong. Will let you know why later.

On the way, we stopped at Bukit Garam to eat lunch. I ate nasik campur + sayur kangkung, sedap gak. Hubby ordered daging masak black soy sauce which is tak sedap langsung. Itulaa order pelik2 lagik, hehe…Btw, this was the only kedai that have cili padi potong. Sebelum nie kalu mintak semua kate takde, instead dia akan kasik sambal.

After lunch, proceed to Gua Gomantong. The road was so bumpy and uncomfortable the whole way. Gua Gomantong is the biggest cave in Sabah. It is divided into many parts, but the 2 big ones are Simud Hitam and Simud Putih. Simud literally means mouth. Entry masuk gua RM5/person, kamera tak bayar pun sebab tak strict kat situ.

Jay ikut sekalik masuk. Baru jalan a few steps, he stopped and showed us the milipede. Bukan setakat tunjuk, dia siap explain species ape, nama scientific ape, habitat and pemakanannya. Wow, impressive.

Then kitorang jalan2 lagik and dia tunjuk pokok bayur, pokok bambu dan pokok2 lain. Ada gak sarang Orang Utan. Baru tahu rupanya Orang Utan buat sarang setiap hari…

Bila sampai dekat muka gua bahagian Simud Hitam, mak aihhh…gelap giler siott…betul ke aku nak masuk nie? 2nd thought 2nd thought…Tapi semua nak masuk takkan lah aku tinggal sorang kat luar kot sbb kat luar tu ada rumah pekerja and siap ada anjing pulak tu. So last last masuk jer la.

Oh my….so busuk!!! Rasa nak patah balik tapi takut laa pulak. Bau taik burung, taik kelawar and whatever laa yg busuk2 belaka hehe…Jay explain burung layang2 keluar waktu siang, kelawar keluar waktu malam. Tapi tak nampak pun kelawar sebab tidor agaknya. Elok gak tak nampak, takut aku kalu keluar jadik dracula pulak hehe…

Jalan lagik masuk ke dalam and we discovered a very beautiful scenery inside. Woww…sebab gua tu ada lubang tengah2 kan so cahaya matahari masuk menyimbah ruang. Mmg cantik laa susah nak describe. Worth it laa masuk hehehe…Then ada batu besar and uniquely ada ukiran gajah atas batu tu terhasil secara semulajadi. Tapi angah mula2 tak nampak bentuk gajah, die nampak bentuk huruf hehehe…Along biasalah, sibuk giler amik gambar.

Masa nak balik tu angah suruh tengok betul2 dinding gua. mak aih! byk giler lipas! Beribu ribu lemon! Macamana laa worker die boley kerja kat situ. Dah ada imunisasi kot. Dahlah tahi burung menimbun macam bukit.

Jay explain pekerja2 tu akan panjat every day utk kutip sarang burung. Payment depends on conmpany. Ada yg bayar fixed RM600/month. Ada yg bayar ikut hasil pada hujung musim menuai. Rupanya Jay pernah kerja dekat situ 2 tahun, no wonder la banyak ilmu dia pasal gua. Katanya memang ada yg pernah maut terjatuh, samada tali putus or tali terhuyung hayang menyebabkan pekerja langgar dinding gua. Ada jugak kes sorang tu terjatuh tapi lucky jatuh atas bukit tahi tu so tak meninggal cuma lumpuh. Purata kemalangan sorang setahun. Pekerja yg ada dlm 20 orang. Waktu kitorang keluar tu lalu tepi rumah diorang (ala rumah panjang), diorang tgh layan IPOD siottt… Yerlah, life could be quite boring kan dekat tempat mcm tu, mana ada shopping mall ke klcc ke hehe…

Lepas Gua Gomantong, naik van utk ke Nature Lodge Kinabatangan. to be continued…

Day 5 (am): Sepilok – the deep eyes

Here we go…continue here for the day 5.

We woke up early, solat subuh lepas tu jalan2 sekitar Sepilok Jungle Resort. The place is very clean, impressive gak la. Along ntah jalan ngan huserz control sampai macamana ntah boley terjatuh. Seb baik makcu got handyplaster hehehe…anyway, lps jln2 aku sambung tido blk sbb tetiba ngantuk.

Woke up again, join they all breakfast roti + scrambled egg tapi still lapar (especially angah) so kitorang order mee goreng (sbb kempunan last nite tak dpt makan). Mee goreng kat sabah nie ala ala maggi goreng la.

Pukul 8.45am jalan pergi Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. 5 minit je sampai. Feel healthy je kat Sabah nie coz asik jalan kaki je.

Kaunter tak bukak lagik so kitorang baca notice board – ada biodata orang utan. Among others biodata Mimi (the mom), Rocky (the son), Annelise, Boy, etc. According to the Info Centre, there are about 200 of Orang Utan there, but only around 20 of them that brave enough to come out during the feeding time.

Gate opened at 9am. Baru masuk sekerat dah kena tahan sbb bebudak nie seludup camera dalam beg! (camera kena bayar RM10). So diorang pergi isi dalam locker, free ajer pun. Baru lah dapat masuk. Baru jalan beberapa langkah, hubby nampak orang utan bergayut kat pokok. Jauh gak la kalau aku tak pakai spec tak nampak pun.

Sampai kat feeding platform pukul 9.20am. Terus duduk depan sekali sebab sedar diri ini pendek. hehehe..Berpeluh siot sbb takde angin plak dlm hutan tu. Abang2 pekerja dekat situ dah start ketuk2 tong biskut. Memula orang utan yg paling kecik muncul. Comel ajer. Pastu around pukul 10 dah ramai yg datang. Besar2 siott sbb ada yg datang dari arah belakang kitorang (so lalu melintas depan mata la), boley nampak tangan kaki die besor gilos. Ada gak yg suka attention, gayut2 and then berhenti tgh2 ala ala posing.

The best thing I observed is that their deep brown eyes. Very different with other animals, almost like human. No wonder we called them Orang Utan. They are adorable too, playing with each other. Ada yg buat daun as their payung. However, a few of them amik makanan and terus blah coz takut dkt Mimi as she has a dominant character.

During the feeding time, tetiba ada segerombolan budak ITM datang. Ya Allah memekak kuat giler! Dahlah tu, amik gambar sesama sendiri siap suruh tourist tolong amikkan gambar. Pastu proud plak tu explain something like “we are university students, doing research bla bla” Ugghhh! So memalukan! As the college students, didn’t they know they have to be quite so that those animals are not afraid to be there??? Pissed me off lar.

Along dapat banyak shot2 menarik (he was the only one that brought the camera along). Nnt aku upload kat fotopages, soon!

Habis tgk kitorang kuar pergi lepak dkt kantin sebab perut lapar balik. Mkn mee sup ayam cepat2 pastu pergi tgk video pulak at 11am. The video illustrated about the rehab centre, how it started, what their objectives and how they educate the villagers. Villagers dulu tak tau they cannot keep orang utan so some of them kept it as pets.

Ketua dr. veterinarian tu cerita (muka dia mcm karam singh walia) pasal seekor orang utan nie yg liarnya agak luar biasa named Mesuari – asik kena jab jer. Besar giler, masa diorang selamatkan dulu he’s barely alive. Tapi bila dah sihat susah betul nak control so diorang decide nak release kan die ke Tabin Reserve, a much larger place than Sepilok. Waktu release dia tu siap pi hantar naik helicopter lagik.

Other than Mesuari, all other Orang Utans are very loving. They are in constant need of love whereby the workers commented that it is very hard not to get emotionally attached. Young Orang Utan can only survive independently only after 6 years old, so before that they are in need of constant care. Hence survival at young age is very important to prevent extinction.

I think it’s weird to think that they are cute, to think those from Ape family is cute? But they really are. Irony, huh.

After video showing (Amin fell asleep half way during the movie!), we proceed to SJR utk kemas barang and wait for Nature Lodge Kinabatangan van to pick us up….to be continued.

I’ll be back

Hi all.

Sorry I have not been updating my Sabah journey story. I caught up with a very hectic schedule at work, at INCEIF (assignments due, stay up late, bla bla bla) and at home (moving to our new home).

I hope I will be able to finish my Borneo story soon. Hopefully before my exam date – 5/5/08 (which is our anniversary date) and before I start working at the new place.

In the mean time, I changed my layout once again. I have used this layout before (in year 2003 if I’m not mistaken), but I love F.R.I.E.N.D.S so so much I decide to use it one more time.

Oh my mom called. Got to go, I’ll be back.
